Having a baby can be the most stressful time of your life. Especially if you’re going to be a brand new mum, then it can be hard to know where to start. Are you able to afford the time off of work if you’re self-employed? Have you only recently joined a new job and then fallen pregnant?
Luckily, the government provides a Maternity Allowance to those that aren’t covered under the Statutory Maternity Pay. This can be a huge bonus for pregnant mums-to-be.
Maternity Allowance Eligibility
Maternity Allowance is paid to pregnant women in the UK and is able to be claimed at any time after 26 weeks of pregnancy.
This financial benefit is different to Statutory Maternity Pay, which is paid by the employer once you have been working in a job for the minimum amount of time.
You will usually be eligible for Maternity Allowance if any of the following apply:
– You haven’t been at your new job long enough for statutory pay
– You have recently left your job for any reason
– Your pay is less than £5,824 in the last tax year
However, if you are unemployed, you have not been working or if you earn less than £120 a month, you won’t be entitled for Maternity Allowance.
You are also eligible to receive Maternity Allowance if you are self-employed, as you otherwise wouldn’t receive Statutory Maternity Pay. Contact Maternity Allowance to see if you qualify.
How much will I receive?
The amount you will receive is based on a number of different factors. The basic entitlement is calculated on how much you earn. You will get 90 per cent of your average weekly income up to a maximum if £140 per week for up to 39 weeks.
You won’t pay any tax on the Maternity Allowance, and if eligible you will also receive National Insurance credits automatically during your allowance, which accumulate against your State Pension entitlement.
It is important that you call the Maternity Allowance helpline to ask about your eligibility. Any financial benefit that you receive may affect other benefits that you get.
It won’t make a difference to your tax credits, but it may affect how much reduction you get in Council Tax. It may also affect how much the government can offer you in Housing Benefit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Carer’s Allowance and Income Support.
Any payments you receive will be made directly into your bank account or building society, and these are made either fortnightly or every four weeks.
It is very important to understand that even if the worst were to happen and you lose the baby, you might still be eligible for Maternity Allowance if the baby is either stillborn from the start of week 24, or is born alive at any point during the pregnancy.
How to make a claim
The best way to make a claim is to call the telephone helpline number above. When calling, you should make sure you have some proof of your salary or income. This may include a P60 End of Year Certificate and any latest payslips.
You may also need proof of your due date, including a letter from a midwife or your MATB1 form. You may also use a SMP1 form if you have been refused pay by your employer.
It’s likely to take only 14 working days to reach a decision on your claim.
Statutory Maternity Pay
You are usually paid a Maternity Allowance when you do not have a job that is required to pay you the statutory amount of maternity pay. This is typically paid for 39 weeks and is similar in amounts to the Maternity Allowance, in that you will receive either £140 per week or 90 per cent of your average weekly earnings (normally the lower amount).
Statutory Maternity Pay is paid exactly the same way as your income, and it subject to Tax and National Insurance.
Statutory Maternity Leave
When you find out you are pregnant, the first thing you might think of is how much maternity leave you could be entitled to. There are two types of leave available. The first is your ordinary maternity, which lasts for the first 26 weeks of your leave. The earliest you can typically start your leave is 11 weeks before your due date.
You are also entitled to additional leave that will last a further 26 weeks, bringing the total amount of Statutory Maternity Leave to a total of 52 weeks, or a whole year.

Sure Start Maternity Grant
If you need a bit more help with your finances, you could also be eligible for £500 paid as a one-off payment to help you towards your first child. This will also be available if you already have children, and you’re expecting twins or triplets!
You will also normally qualify if you or your partner already get financial assistance, including Income Support, or Jobseeker’s Allowance.
You will be given the Sure Start Maternity Grant if you apply before the deadline, and you won’t ever have to pay it back. If you already have kids under the age of 16 then you can receive up to £1,000 in a grant if you have triplets.
You can begin your claim starting from 11 weeks before your due date. The absolute latest that you can claim is 90 days after you have your baby.
